How Many Languages Do You Speak? More Than You Think!

It was an absolute pleasure to speak at the American Red Cross about one of the most overlooked yet powerful leadership tools: language. Not just the words we speak, but the many ways we connect—across cultures, industries, and generations.

The Power of Language in Leadership

Language is influence. It shapes understanding. When someone says, “You’re speaking my language,” what they really mean is “You get me.” And when people feel understood, trust is built, connections deepen, and a shared purpose becomes possible.

As a leader, how many “languages” do you truly speak? Communication extends far beyond spoken words, and embracing different forms of language allows us to lead with greater impact. Personally, I’ve learned to communicate in:

Traditional languages – Spanish, English, Portuguese.
Generational languages – I am a native Gen X speaker. I am fluent in Boomer (poetry, long-form writing, calligraphy). Proficient in Millennial (280-character clarity). Still learning Gen Z (LOL, OMG, IDK, TBH). Working on Gen Alpha (with help from my teenage family members!).
Professional languages – Corporate speak, industry jargon, entrepreneurial storytelling.
Emotional languages – Inspired by Gary Chapman, I continue to learn the “love languages” that bridge human connection.

Every interaction is an opportunity to meet people where they are, speaking different languages that speak to their hearts. While we celebrate the decimal point of what makes us unique, let’s embrace the 99.9% of DNA that unites us as human beings.

A Lasting Impact

The response to this conversation was nothing short of inspiring. It reinforced the importance of fostering understanding through language, a skill that is essential in leadership, teamwork, and community-building.
